Tsugumi Roasted Kukicha

$10.20$36.70

Tsugumi Roasted Kukicha is a roasted Japanese green tea made from the stems and veins of tencha (the shade-grown leaves used to make matcha).

Tasting Notes: the liquor is a bit redder than I’m used to seeing from houjicha, the dry leaves have a pretty light roasted aroma, not like the dominant ones you’ll find in other more heavily roasted teas. That smell gets pumped up when you start the infusion, it has a bit of a peculiar spicy, dried herby smell to it as well. It’s not at all bitter, and a little zesty on your tongue. Overall a very pleasant tea to drink at any time of day. I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking for something less intense (as far as body and brain feeling go) but still flavourful.

Some things worth noting about this tea:

  • Being a kukicha (stem tea) it’s naturally lower in caffeine than other green teas (but there’s still enough to notice).
  • In matcha production they shade-grow the leaves then carefully remove the stems and veins before processing it into matcha. So not only does it have something extra from that shading period, but this is also essentially a tea made from a by-product, so no waste, wooh!
  • It’s been lightly roasted which changes the flavour profile but it hasn’t got those strong, pungent roasty smells you get from heavier, darker roasts.
  • Tsugumi is a species of thrush native to Japan, I’m not sure why the producers named it after this bird, but I think it has a regal air to it.
