At the start of December 2025 I went on my first trip to Japan, I spent 1 day in Tokyo and then spent the rest of the trip in the much more rural and laid back prefecture of Shizuoka, with beautiful views of Mt Fuji and lovely people. I had a great time practicing my Japanese, and on the second to last day went up to a tea factory on the other side of the Abe river at the start of a mountainous tea farm area called Ashikubo to see if I could potentially scout out some good sencha for the shop, after trying some tea and some slightly rushed conversation with my (fledgling level) Japanese I purchased several bags of a lightly oxidized sencha of the Koushun variety, it smelt similar to Taiwanese high mountain oolongs and was particularly fragrant and interesting. Unfortuantely what I must have misunderstood at the time is that the bags I was buying were 50g bags containing 10 x 5g teabags each. I’m personally not the biggest teabag fan, however it’s still very nice tea and I don’t want it to go to waste so with a lower margin than usual I’m putting it up here anyway, if you need teabags to brew with while you’re out and about or want to experiment with cold brewing, or just want to drink some nice sencha, please give this tea a try, it smells really good.
When brewing it produces a thick yellowy green liquor, it’s very aromatic all the way through smelling like something between a green taiwanese high mountain oolong and a sencha, with all the aromatic and flavour qualities of the Japanese terroir mixed in as well. It starts off fairly strong with some very slight bitterness and then mellows out maintaining a strong flavour for several brews, a very unique sencha.
Brew this tea however you like, but don’t go over 80°C or do too concentrated brews, will work fine in a cup or in a teapot, if you want to take the leaves out of the bag you’ll need a tea strainer to keep the fine particles from getting into the cup. I brewed this tea with 1 tea bag (5g) in a 200ml kyusu at 70-80°C 5 times with steepings of 70s, 30s, 60s, 70s, 80s and thoroughly enjoyed it.
- This is an asamushi (lightly steamed) sencha of the koushun cultivar.
- This tea was left to slightly oxidize before being steamed which gives it similar characteristics to a very green oolong.
- This tea is currently only available in 50g bags of 10 x 5g pyramid teabags.
