“Hisoka” Yutaka Midori (密かゆたかみどり) is a Japanese green tea, specifically a sencha made from plants of the Yutaka Midori variety grown in Kagoshima. Yutaka Midori means abundant green, while this tea’s moniker Hisoka means secret.
The dry leaves have a strong sweet aroma of berries, like the smell you’d expect from a strawberry flavoured sweet. The aroma remains in the liquor while the wet leaves smell more stewed (though you can still notice it). It has a mild slightly umami, sweet taste, with a little bitterness. These characteristics are amplified the more tea you use. The empty cup smell is almost as sweet, but not as powerful as when you first open the bag.
- This tea was a part of the first flush harvest, and was grown without use of pesticides, only using organic compost.
- This is an asamushi (lightly steamed) sencha.
- Yutaka Midori is the second most common tea cultivar in Japan and is primarily cultivated in Kagoshima.
- The producer recommend brewing this tea at 60°C for the first infusion for 1-2 minutes (make sure you pre-heat your cup and brewing vessel or you’ll get lukewarm tea).
- This tea is only available in 80g amounts.
