This is a beautiful handcrafted chawan (tea bowl) ideal for drinking matcha from. This is Shigaraki stoneware, Shigaraki is a historical region in Japan located in modern day Kouka, Shiga prefecture. Shigaraki wares (信楽焼) date back many hundreds of years. Shigaraki is one of the famous “Six Old Kilns” of Japan. The clay is sourced from Lake Biwa, estimated to be the 13th oldest lake in the world. It has a natural orange colour visible in this set. The outer glaze is caused by natural combination of ash and feldspar on the exterior during firing.

Some notes on this product:

  • This bowl was made in Shigaraki, Shiga, Japan
  • The design and colours on each bowl are slightly different.
  • Before using for the first time rinse the bowl with hot water to wash-off any residue left-over from manufacturing or packaging.
  • To clean rinse with hot water (boiling water is ideal), and air-dry. Wash shortly after use to avoid stains.
  • Do not put in the microwave or dishwasher.
  • Only 5 of this bowl are available.
