This is a Japanese teaset including a Kyusu with a ceramic mesh ball style strainer, and 4 cups. The kyusu has a volume of about 330ml, and each cup has a volume of about 110ml (measured filled to the brim). This is Shigaraki stoneware, Shigaraki is a historical region in Japan located in modern day Kouka, Shiga prefecture. Shigaraki wares (信楽焼) date back many hundreds of years. Shigaraki is one of the famous “Six Old Kilns” of Japan. The clay is sourced from Lake Biwa, estimated to be the 13th oldest lake in the world. It has a natural orange colour visible in this set. The outer glaze is caused by natural combination of ash and feldspar on the exterior during firing.

Some notes on this teaset:

  • The packaging is not in the best condition as this has been in storage for quite some time.
  • The Kyusu is not entirely glazed and will absorb tea over time slightly changing the appearance of the clay and having a small impact on the flavour of the tea brewed in the Kyusu, it may also weep water a little bit as the clay is fairly porous so use on a tray or tea towel.
  • This teaset was handmade by the Marui Seitou (丸伊製陶) company in Kouka, Shiga, Japan.
  • Rinse several times with hot water before use to wash off any dust leftover from manufacture.
  • To clean rinse with hot water (boiling water is ideal), shake any water inside out, then leave to air-dry with the lid off.
  • Not microwave or dishwasher safe.
  • Do not use detergent to wash this teapot, hot (ideally boiling) water is enough.
  • There is only 1 of this teaset available.
  • Wash soon after every use to avoid mould or buildup of bad odours.
  • This was inherited from Ya-Ya Teahouse.
