Bamboo Chasen (Matcha Whisk) 100 Tines

This is a bamboo chasen (matcha whisk) with approximately 100 tines (prongs). This is the best tool there is to use to make matcha (especially thin matcha or usucha). While getting a great froth with a chasen can take some practice even a novice can make some decent froth with a little vigour.

For information how to make matcha with this whisk please read through the “Matcha Style” section of our Brewing Guide

Some notes on this product:

  • The plastic tubes the chasens are packed in may be quite badly scratched, this is due to heavy jostling during shipment to me, the whisks themselves are fine. You are not meant to store the chasen in these, after opening store it open to the air on a kusenaoshi or in a safe place with the tines facing up.
  • This is made of bamboo.
  • This was manufactured in China.
  • The only variety available is that pictured in the photos though your chasen may differ slightly due to minor manufacturing differences.
  • Before using for the first time rinse the lower half (not the handle) with hot water to wash-off any residue left-over from manufacturing or packaging. The ends that are initially curled up are meant to uncurl when first wet and used.
  • A chasen won’t last forever and you will need to replace it eventually, however there are things you can do to extend it’s life, these include: storing it on a kusenaoshi or upright with the tines facing up, wet the whisk in hot water before you start whisking, vigorously whisk hot water after you finish whisking to clean the chasen and remove matcha residue, not rubbing the whisk against the bottom of the bowl or hitting the sides too hard while whisking.
  • While this whisk was made in China, for the absolute best matcha experience we do recommend buying an authentic hand-made Japanese produced chasen, we may sell these in the future but wanted to prioritize accessibility in price to begin with.
